Since the early days of gaming, gamers always had a thing for role-playing games. And titles from various franchises like Final Fantasy and The Elder Scrolls left us in awe. From battling electric-charged enemies to fighting off dragons, RPGs came a long way and they have contributed massively to the success of the gaming industry.

Moving on, last year was a bit crazy, all thanks to the Coronavirus pandemic because it forced developers to put a stop to the development of the games, and unfortunately, many mouth-watering RPGs were also delayed. But with the changing circumstances, it’s almost certain that we will finally be able to get our hands on many exceptional RPGs in the latter part of 2021.

Numerous RPGs are coming our way this year and it’s hard to keep track of all of them but for all RPG-fanatics, we’ve compiled a list of the 5 best RPGs that we’re really looking forward to. So bear with us till the end as we review the finest upcoming RPGs of 2021.

1. Elden Ring

It’s been quite a while since we witnessed an RPG with fire-breathing dragons and dark dungeons with a handful of mythical creatures to fight. But, we don’t have to wait much longer to get those Skyrim vibes because Elden Ring is dropping out in 2021.

Developed by FromSoftware, Elden Ring is an action RPG set in a war-torn world with mysterious circumstances that involve sorcery and secrets of the dark side. Unfortunately, the developers weren’t very forthcoming about the details of the game, and even though the development of Elden Ring began in 2017, we still haven’t had a single bit of gameplay from the studio.

Furthermore, the release date of Elden Ring is not confirmed either but some reputable sources suggest that we might get our hands on Elden Ring quite sooner. Also, it is rumored that Elden Ring might feature many RPG-elements from the Dark Soul franchise because both of these installments are developed by FromSoftware.

Moreover, an anonymous user supposedly posted leaked in-game footage of Elden ring which suggests that the game is fully developed and there’s a solid chance that we might get a glimpse of the gameplay at the virtual E3 event.

2. Outriders

If you have a thing for butchering your enemies with customized weapons coupled with brutal takedowns then Outriders is right up your alley.

Outriders is an action RPG that is played in the 3rd-person perspective with four different classes that have their own unique skills. Players can choose from any class and descend to the battleground to fight off enemies. Each class is different from the other and offers a unique gameplay.

Demo of Outriders is available to the gamers and from what we saw so far, we’re really impressed with the development of the game. Smooth gameplay with exciting perks and wicked takedowns, Outriders is everything and more that you desire from an action RPG.

With character customization and a skill tree to take your skills to the next level, this game features many excellent RPG elements that most games lack these days. Also, the dialogue system also plays a vital role in the progress of the game and each decision could also impact the storyline as well.

Luckily, this game is just around the corner and we don’t have to wait much longer to play one of the most anticipated RPGs of the year. Outriders will be fully launched on 1st April 2021 and will be available for the next-gen consoles, Stadia, and PC.

3. Final Fantasy XVI

The Final Fantasy franchise pretty much laid the foundation of role-playing games and each installment in the franchise is regarded as the best RPG of its time. The latest installment in the FF franchise, Final Fantasy VII Remake blew us away with its amazing gameplay and mechanics. And since we saw the trailer for Final Fantasy XVI – Awakening, we’re expecting something similar.

Aside from the teaser trailer, nothing much has been revealed about the game. But, with the help of credible sources, we now know a lot about the upcoming installment in the Final Fantasy franchise.

Final Fantasy XVI is bringing fresh content with the game being set in Vallis Thea, a realm where the tension between the seven kingdoms is on the rise and at the brink of the war, the spread of Blight is a worry that concerns all the nations.

The main protagonist is a sworn protector of the realm and he must fight-off devilish creatures and must stand against a powerful enemy like Blight to become the savior of the realm.

Moreover, From what we saw in the trailer, there are all sorts of creatures hovering around the realm but we’ll have to leave a trail of bodies in our wake if we were to succeed. Unlike other installments in the series, Final Fantasy XVI will not feature turn-based combat tactics and will feature different combat styles, similar to the Final Fantasy VII Remake.

It’s not sure when Final Fantasy XVI will be released but, one thing that we know so far is that it will be a PS5 exclusive and might get a release date for PC down the line. Nevertheless, we’re really looking forward to the latest entry in the Final Fantasy franchise.

4. Fable

Out of the ordinary, Playground Games have announced that they are binging Fable, an iconic RPG that captured our hearts when it first came out in the early 2000s. Played in the 3rd-person perspective, Fable is a barbaric open-world game that is open to all kinds of possibilities.

From hanging out with your pets to dismantling fierce creatures of the realm, Fable is everything more that you ask from an open-world RPG game. Furthermore, as for the RPG-elements, Fable is a wholesome RPG with character customization and a lot of other exciting elements that turn this game into one of the finely crafted RPGs of our time.

Unfortunately, we don’t know much about the upcoming game in the Fable franchise because, after the trilogy, many thought that it was the end of the franchise but luckily it wasn’t.

From the teaser, it can be predicted that Fable will be released on the next-gen consoles and unlike any other installment in the franchise, the graphics and the overall gameplay of the game would be very different from the previous games.

We don’t know exactly when this game will be released but, it is expected that Fable might be released near the Holiday season.

5. Dragon Age 4

It’s a fact that we don’t know much about Dragon Age 4 but, if we were to guess, it is an exciting upcoming RPG game that might be released in 2021. However, the announcement trailers don’t seem to reveal much about that. Also, it may or may not have revealed that Bioware is picking a new protagonist for their new installment in the Dragon Age franchise.

After dodging questions for years, Bioware finally gave gamers something to chew with their teaser trailer because other than that, there’s no official statement on when the game will be out or who’s the main antagonist.

Regardless of that, one thing that developers shared last year was that the game was in early development and critics believe that with this reveal trailer, it can be predicted that Dragon Age 4 might be just around the corner.

It’s unclear how the events will unfold in the glowing city of Tevinter but to find out, I guess we’ll have to keep a closer eye on Bioware at this year’s E3 event.

A lot of exciting RPGs will be released this year and it’s not official yet but, there’s a solid chance that we might get to see some initial gameplay from Elder Scrolls VI as well. Furthermore, there are also some talks that we might get to see Fallout 5 for the first time on the big screen but, the chances of Bethesda revealing a new Fallout game this year are also quite slim.

Nevertheless, all kinds of RPGs are coming in 2021 and if you think that we missed a few then feel free to comment down below to let us know which RPGs deserved a spot.
