I’m sure that we’ll be missing out on a lot of well-deserved titles that should be a part of our list, but, there’s only so much we can do. Nevertheless, while keeping the critics’ reviews in mind, here’s the list of the best survival games of all time. Make sure to stick with us till the very end to hear our thoughts on each title.

Best Survival Games: Countdown

Shadow of the Tomb Raider

The Tomb Raider reboot from Square Enix left gamers in awe with their uniquely narrated videos games and the last one from the series, Shadow of the Tomb Raider is one of the best adventure/survival games on the face of the earth. The campaign is extremely beautifully designed with a stunning world backed by a deep storyline that has its ups and downs.

From crafting poisonous arrows to exploring the deep dungeons for supplies, Shadow of the Tomb Raider offers an incredible experience and the stealth factor makes it even more appealing for gamers who enjoy challenging gameplay. All-in-all, Lara Croft’s struggle against Trinity is well worth it and if someone wants to spend a few hours of realistic survival gaming then they’ll enjoy Shadow of the Tomb Raider.

Ark: Survival Evolved

From recruiting the most deadly dinosaurs of the realm to grinding stones to collect supplies, Ark: Survival Evolved, with its own moments, made it one of the most loved and popular survival games of all time. And of course, why wouldn’t it? It has flying dragons, which are more than enough for gamers to calm their lions and play their fantasies of riding a flying dragon or better, controlling a fire-breathing dragon that besieges your opponents.

In just a few years, Ark: Survival Evolved with its unique survival world has made quite a name for itself and with thousands of concurrent players, Ark: Survival Evolved is still going strong and attracting players from all over the world. The settings of this survival game are quite intriguing and players have to build everything from scratch and use different resources to craft useful items.

In a way, Ark: Survival Evolved is quite challenging, especially when you’re going toe-to-toe with your foes in the multiplayer mode.

The Long Dark

And while we’re on the subject, The Long Dark is probably the most realistic survival sandbox game that you’ll ever come across. Set in the cold-hearted wilderness of Canada where everything is covered under the white coat of snow, your aim is to survive, relying only on your surroundings. Whether it’s crafting materials to make a fire to purifying water to drink, The Long Dark heavily focuses your player’s creativity for their survival.

And with the story mode telling us more about the protagonist and the tale of his plane’s crash, you feel a sense of attachment to the player, making the experience a memorable one. Although those wolves that keep haunting you, even in your dreams, can surely prove to be a real headache, however, when you’re all equipped with the required resources, you’ll do quite well in The Long Dark.

Each episode of the story mode is better than the last and someone who enjoys a perfectly-narrated story in a unique sandbox would definitely have the feels for The Long Dark in their bones.

The Forest

Writers seem to take a liking to plane-crashing because similar to The Long Dark, the plot in The Forst starts with the crashing of a jet on the middle of nowhere Island, inhabited by cannibals mutants betting on drinking your blood. Moreover, after crashing in the middle of nowhere, we have to survive on a strange island and that can only be done by using our instincts and creativity.

Similar to other survival games, the decisions you make can come back to haunt you. Whether you’re spending supplies or going against hordes of cannibal mutants, each decision you make will have an impact on the gameplay. Furthermore, aside from the realistic survival experience, the graphics of the game are absolutely stunning and the heart-wrenching story creates a strong bond with the protagonist and his son.

As you make progress, the game gets quite fun and although those dark caves are almost too dark to explore, anyone who enjoys a well-crafted survival game would be dying to get their hands on The Forest.

No Man’s Sky

Hello Games set the bar really high with their survival co-op game that laid the foundation for many survival games to come. Its out-of-the-world narrative, literally, made a huge impact on the genre and contributed a lot to the success of the genre over the years. Moreover, the protagonist, after crashing his ship on a random planet inhabited by all sorts of creatures, finds himself in dire need of special requirements if he is to make it off the planet.

And after collecting the required resources, players can choose to fly off to millions of other planets in the realm, each with its own resources and scenery. The infinite possibility of fun in No Man’s Sky made it one of a kind and also one of the best survival games of all time. From crafting carbon and upgrading the ship and discovering new spices, No Man’s Sky makes you want to play this game for hours without ever thinking about taking your eyes off those beautifully crafted planets.

That’s all folks!
